Giving the Team a Fast Start with a New Leader

Accelerating Impact for a New Leader and Her Team

Getting a new leader or many new team members can slow things down and cause problems. This client used our Fast Start workshop to quickly assimilate a new leader and four new team members. The team got to know each other, agree on a new direction, and identify how they can work together effectively.

"I wanted to build a team that would learn, listen to each other, and work together to achieve our goals. This was the right kick-off to head us in that direction."

Approach

A new leader moved into a global commercial team, but she did not have any commercial experience. Additionally, four other team members from other parts of the organisation moved into the team. They needed to quickly agree on how to work together to maintain commercial momentum.

They used our Fast Start workshop to:

  1. Assimilate the New Leader and Team Members

An assimilation helped the team understand each other, align their expectations, and get answers to important questions. This helped level-set the team as a whole.

  2. Agree Why the Team Exists

The team agreed their role in coming together was to drive performance, energize others and transform for the future. This helped them identify their big priorities.

  3. Agree How to Work Together

Based on these outcomes, the team identified their cadence and how they would work together as a leadership team to achieve important organisation outcomes.

Leadership Team Member Quote

"Some team members were sceptical of having a non-commercial leader and were unsure of some of the other leader appointments made. This workshop helped put that concern to rest."

Results

The team had a history of not meeting expectations. This workshop and the new leader and team members changed this.

  • Strong Foundation. The team came away from the workshop with a clear sense of purpose and set of goals. They were happy that they had a good foundation as a team.

  • Improved Engagement. Their next employee engagement survey showed significant improvement in the leadership team's engagement scores and record levels of engagement for teams below their level.

  • Record Performance. Because the team worked well together, the team and their organisation exceeded all expectations for revenue and all other key metrics.
