American Express: Coaching for Growth
Supporting High-Potential Leaders to Deliver Growth Projects
American Express line leaders had identified a set of growth projects to increase revenue and profit. HR suggested driving the projects through their high-potential leaders in order to deliver the projects while building growth capabilities. This would also allow greater exposure to leaders, enabling more cross-business talent movement. Personal Training coaching was used to support the projects and develop the leaders.
Approach
American Express leveraged our Personal Training methodology and our 4D Strategic Project Process and Toolkit to help leaders deliver projects.
Through this process, leaders:
Conducted a Strategic Analysis
Leaders learned new skills in gathering and analysing external and internal data to identify possible solutions for their projects.
Designed and Piloted Solutions
Leaders engaged cross-business stakeholders to agree on a strategic solution and then learned new skills to design and pilot test the solution.
Delivered Final Solutions
Coaches helped leaders learn new change management skills throughout the entire process, enabling handover of the solution to functional departments.
Results
American Express wanted to deliver real growth projects to the business and better move talent across the organisation. They achieved both objectives:
Projects Delivered. All projects were delivered and met business expectations (e.g., increased sales, increased efficiency).
50% of Leaders Moved. Leaders increased their visibility in the organisation. Within six months, half of the leaders were promoted or laterally moved across a line of business.
